November 24, 2011My truck on 38`s gets 11 around town and about 13 or 14 on the highway with 4.56 gears. My truck used to get 14 around town and 16 on the highway but my cats are going bad causing all sorts of issues.
It also depends how you drive it and your gear ratio. Are you going to run 35`s or do you currently run them with the body lift?
November 24, 2011Really it depends on what gears you have. If you have the right gear set, you`ll still get decent mileage.
My old 03 5.3L with 4.10 gears and custom tune achieved 14-15mpg intown and 17-18mpg highway if I kept the speed under 70mph.

November 24, 2011ha speed under 70.... not on those back roads up near u!
November 24, 2011Well I have factory gears not sure of what those are? And I have made myself start driving and keeping my RPMs low but I`ll admit those back roads are tempting. Any ideas of what I can do to get some mpg back? Nothing expensive just sunk all my money into this! I plan on keeping my 35`s as long as possible if It dosent look goofy I`m keeping them!
November 24, 2011Well, check your RPO codes in the glove box.
GU6 - 3.42`s
GT4 - 3.74`s
GT5 - 4.10`s
G80 - Factory lockers.
Did you adjust the PCM for the 35" tires. If not your mileage and speedo are reporting wrong making your mileage look worse than it is.
If you have anything below 4.10, a gear swap would be about the only way to get your mileage back. IF you don`t plan on going any bigger than 35" tires, then 4.56`s would be a wonderful choice. If you think your gonna go bigger, then 4.88`s with a differential girdle for added support would be what you want.
November 24, 2011I`ll have to go find out later the code and no I haven`t change anything for the 35s my speedo is 5 mph Off but as fOr the rest I`m not sure how dO you go about changing that ?
November 24, 2011You need some sort of programmer. You have 2 choices really. Either a handheld programmer like DiabloSport or Superchips or... a custom tune from someone like www.blackbearperformance.com or www.gowheatley.com
My personal experience has been the custom tunes from either Justin (Blackbear) Charlie (GoWheatley) yield the best performance. They can program for the larger tires, performance increases, shift patterns, gears swaps and much much more. Spend some time on their websites and you`ll see what they can do for you.
Programers like diabloSport or superchips offer good things too. They can do data logging, read and clear trouble codes, offer a couple different tunes and DiabloSport can upload custom tunes as well from various providers.
Hope that helps s:
November 24, 2011glad to see you all back on the forum! hope you are doing well
November 24, 2011Thanks s:
November 24, 2011yup gears and tires are the main two players in the mpg game. Engine mods (hp) plays a part as well but its mainly the other two.
It seems to be hit and miss on the 99+ era on what they were equipped with. But converting to an electric fan rather than a clutch type will help mpg. Getting rid of the POS pinched off GM design intake will help tons and an open element filter on top of that. Any type of aftermarket free flowing exhaust. Then to get into a little deeper stuff there is programmers.
Handhelds work amazaing on 99+ gm trucks, Custom tunes even more so. The custom tune would allow you too do crazier things like a program to run your e-fans (electric fans,) egr delete, 02 sensor delete, modify air to fuel trims, aftermarket cam specs, and just about everything you could think of.
November 24, 2011its good seeing all you guys on here too its been a long time! anyway, im gonna be honest im broke now. i dont have money for anything but the install, literally. lol so the gears are gonna tell me what kinda mileage to expect? im gonna go look after i post this and post again. im gonna keep my 315s im not worried about em looking small i juist wanna go bigger with the truck for now. anybody else with my year model or close running the 6 + 3 combo and go a good readback on mileage let me know! also should i have got the steering stabalizer and tie rod sleeve upgrades?
