October 22, 2011ok so i bought a 97 gmc z71 ext. cab shortbed with 115,000 miles about 3 months ago. a one owner truck. loved the truck. then burnt the cap and rotor ok not bad. Then i think i hear a mild knock.. idk if im just peranoid or what then i say ok ill keep it and just see, Then check engine light comes on. 2 codes both 02 sensors. i feel like something is gonna go wrong and then when i decide to say screw it and keep it stuff keeps happening. Now my radiator is leaking damn it idk what to do because its hard to find a rust free low milage 97 z71 like mine

October 23, 2011YYou bought very nice 15 year old truck with 115k. More than likely the prior owner has ignored maintenance since he considered a new truck. The radiator failure at this age is not unexpected. If the O2 sensors where original, 15 years and 115k isn`t a bad life. The cap and rotor was due 15k ago and the plugs and wires are still due. You still need to make sure all the fluids have been changed, the trans and fuel filter should have been done awhile ago so if you doubt those, just do them. Same goes with the belt and hoses. Have the battery load tested before winter, its free any place that sells batteries and will give you peace of mind. A knock when cold is common on these trucks, its called piston slap and even though it sounds bad, it wont hurt your engine as long as it goes away while its warming up on those cold mornings. I suggest you take a longer view. If your willing to turn the wrenches yourself a few hours of work and a few hundred dollars you will have a very reliable truck. Mine is a 98 with 116k on it and have done all of these things except the radiator and the O2`s, but I`ve also rebuilt the rear axle and brakes all around. Costs of owning older vehicles.
October 24, 2011I have had issues like that with my 98 and 97 1500s. Its normal stuff it just sucks when it all happens at the same time. I had a code for 02 sensors replaced the 1 lower and it went away and came back. I believe my cats are shot.

the items you are having issues with is normal wear and tear items on our trucks
the radiator is going to cost you unless you go with a used one
the rest of it is just maintenance items that the truck is needing
October 24, 2011Trust me man you`ll want to keep this one. My 96 had given me a few maintenance problems over the last few months but like the other guys said if you can turn some wrenches and spend a few hundred you`ll have a great truck. My 96 has 188000 miles and I just did a bottom half rebuild on the motor. Now shes purring like a kitten and ready to go for another 200000 or more! Once you get it up to date, start doing a little bit of preventive maintenance and you`ll see a major improvement in reliability and ruggedness!

October 26, 2011these trucks run forever. i`ve seen these trucks with over 250k miles, with proper maint. out perform fords with under 150k miles. The key is maintenance. if you keep it up, initially it looks costly, but long term, maintaining a vehicle is ALOT cheaper than getting another one. I just bought my current truck a few months ago, replaced the PMD ($350) and will be doing glow plugs next week (ordered, waiting for them to arrive) but beyond that nothing else wrong and 200k miles. My 94 454 had over 200k miles, and it had more pull than my buddy`s built 400. if you maintain these trucks, they are fantastic. it sucks when you are forced to do the repairs right after buying a truck, but hopefully you got a good deal on the truck to cover the repairs. When i comes to these trucks i`ll look at `em if they have under 200k miles, because i know they will last for atleast another 50-100k miles. don`t worry your truck will last for a while if you maintain her
