June 22, 2011My tranny shifts hard from P to D, and shifts super hard from 1-2. Everything else is normal. The only code I get is a 35 - idle air control. I was going to replace this, but was wondering since I don`t have a catalytic converter and the oxygen sensor is not hooked up would that be the likely cause of the trouble code 35?? Would replacing this IAC do anything for my hard shifting??? I also read that maybe changing out my tps might help with the hard shifting?? Does anyone know exactly where this tps is located?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

June 22, 2011Hi Man, well unfortunately to tell you, your 4l60 is dying. Mine started that in 08 with the tough shift between 1 and 2 every once in awhile. Eventually the OD will start to go. My trans is doing the rough shift more often and the coming out of OD alot. You could limp it along for awhile like i have been doing but soon it will fail just like mine is. Not sure about the other questions you had though. I would imagine though not having the 02 sensor a cat hooked up is messing with the computer.
June 23, 2011^^^^^yep.
mine started doing this when the torque converter was going kaput, not too long after that i lost OD, then pretty much the entire tranny due to overheating....
June 23, 2011I`m not sold on it being the tranny is going out, I would suggest driving it like a hot rod everyday. They have a learning process, if you drive it hard it will continue to stiffen the shift. Then one day when you are out on a sunday cruise it will slam into the next gear... drive it easy all the time.
June 23, 201198slv So what your saying is drive it like a hotrod everyday?? This will do what?? My truck is a 93 with a 4.3 V6, does it have a learning process?? So are you kidding or serious?? Not sure what you mean when you say "Then one day when you are out on a sunday cruise it will slam into the next gear" it is slamming now from 1-2???
June 23, 2011when was the last time you had the tranny fluid changed
i know the one in my 95 when it starts shifting hard, and if i ran hard from a light it would slip from 1st to 2nd, the fluid is burned up and needs swapped
June 23, 2011i meant NOT like a hot rod and you have a 700R4 not a 4L60E two different transmissions. yours is a piece of crap, now that i know its a 700r4 yea your transmission probably needs replaced.
June 23, 2011I had the tranny fluid and filter changed 2 years ago. It is full, still red, and no burnt smell. It is the 4l60e. The guy at the tranny shop checked to see which one it was since that was the first year to get the electronic version. My tranny has never been rebuilt and has 290,000 miles on her!! Xcutioner: It`s not slipping from 1-2, it`s shifting HARD!!!
June 23, 2011if youre certain its not crapping out on you, you may want to check on the valve body. i believe that part sometimes gets stuck as the transmission gets older.
does it shift hard always? or do you have to get on and off the highway before it starts?
June 23, 2011It`s doing it all the time. I think I`m going to try and find someone to rebuild it cheap or swap out trannys.
June 24, 2011word of advice if you decide to change the fluid and filter do not i repeat do not take out the little metal ring that holds the filter in. when i did mine, it came with a new ring and so i took my old one out that was perfectly fine, to replace with a new one and i couldn`t get the new one in for nothing! i finally gave up, thought i was going to tear up tranny. there must be a trick or special tool or something.
June 25, 2011****UPDATE**** Thanks guys for all the good advice!! I`ve found a shop about 40 min. away in a small town that rebuilds trannys for cheap. Guarantees thier work. 2 year warranty or 10,000 miles. Told me that my tranny is very easy to take out and work on. Told me that the springs in something ??? are probably broken?? Going to rebuild for $600 as long as there`s nothing broken inside yet?? Also said the most important thing is to seal it back up good?? He told me a whole bunch of things....very knowledgable with the 4L60e. Taking it to him tomorrow. He said it would take about a week and a half. Said something about soaking it in a bath of something at first?? Said he puts shift kits in all the trannys he rebuilds also. Sorry, I don`t know a whole lot about tranny rebuilds, so can`t remember all that he told me.
