November 15, 2009The transmission finally died in my truck friday. Had to have it towed to the shop yesterday afternoon. So the shop gives the driver my number, he calls me needing directions from a town that i`ve never been to or have any idea where it is. After a few minutes, we`re able to figure out where he is at and all he has to do is come off the highway and make a left turn. Five minutes later, i get a call from the shop saying the driver just called them saying he couldn`t get directions from me. Eventually he arrives and starts to hook up to the back of my truck. As he is trying to turn around in the parking lot instead of waiting for me to move my rental car out of the way, he ends up with the tow truck and my truck at a 90 degree angle and puts a metal rigging point on the back of his truck into the side of mine. Makes a nice 3 inch or so scratch down the side by the back bumper, pushed in the rocker panel where the scratch is, and scratched up the end of the bumper. I`m trying to get his attention so he will stop but i guess he didn`t notice till i ran over and opened up his passenger door. All he has to say is "i guess we`ll have to see if the shop can buff that out." Doesn`t even apologize, just says he wont have to make any more sharp bends so it should be ok. Then he informs me that i have to show him how to get back on the highway even after i explain he just needs to go straight down the road about 6 miles and turn left. Then drive straight for an hour. He then jumps in his truck and goes to pull out on the road before i can even give him the keys to my truck. And to finish things off, i had to lead him 20 minutes out of town. Anyone else have this much trouble with needing a tow?
November 15, 2009sounds like a nightmare.
when they towed mine he made me drive the truck up the flatbed......never did it before and the parking brake did not work any more; and the tranny was shot, would just crawl enought o get up there. otherwise never any issues
November 15, 2009No matter what profession there are moron`s.
November 15, 2009The only thing that worries me is the guy who owns the shop is a friend and a good cheep mechanic. I would hate to lose either. I called him about what happened as soon as the tow truck left and he said he would check it out. I have no reason to think this wont be taken care of since the owner is a good guy but i`ve also seen how easily things can get screwed up when you mix business and personal life. Then again i tend to worry too much so who knows.
November 17, 2009I think it would hav e been a good idea to take pictures with his equipment in the side of your truck, even if it`s with your cell phone. It`s a lot harder for him to argue later with some evidence on your part.
November 17, 2009Yeah i thought about that but things happened so fast, i didn`t get a chance. It looks like i don`t have to worry about it though. I got my truck back last night. I was told that when i bring it back this weekend so they can change the fluids out after i put a few hundred miles on the transmission, they are going to take it to the body shop and have the driver cover the cost. The shop owner even said i could use his truck till i get mine back. He did the job about 5 days faster and 300 - 700 dollars cheaper then another guy quoted me. Truck runs great and he even delivered it right to my house when the job was finished. Gotta say, i rather happy with the service.
November 18, 2009Sounds like a real moron. Guess I have been lucky...never have had problems like that.
November 18, 2009Hey I`ve got an 01 1500 also, and mine is shifting hard into 2nd when I take off slow from a stop, how many miles on yours before it went?
and sorry to hear that, my buddy hard his 94 grand am towed for 20 bucks to his shop and no problems at all...guess you were unlucky.
November 19, 2009I don`t know what it is with tow drivers, but many do not seem to care about your vehicle. My wife`s car (front bumper)was damaged, by the way they hook their chain to the front of the vehicle to tow it up onto the flat bed. He didn`t seem to care at all when I mentioned to him that the chains were scraping the paint along the bottom of the bumper.
November 19, 2009SwatZ,
Took my 02 with 125k in about a month ago and the "transmission specialist" in town told me that the sound I hear was "backlash" or what I would call play in the drive shaft where it enters the rear differential. He said that Chevrolet put out a bulletin making repair shops and dealerships aware of the fact that it is a "normal" noise and occurence in Chevy pickups. I don`t know if I buy his story, but I am usually one to dig a little deeper for an answer I wanna hear. For now, its gonna hafta stay that way anyway, cuz I don`t have the Benjamins to look any further into it?????
November 19, 2009WOW that sucks if i ha dany trans trouble all id have to do is call my dad to bring his big flat bed with the winch that way if anything happens to the truck its our own fault
November 22, 2009Sorry about the late reply I was up north...But Yeah I figured I`d get 120K out of mine because I know exactly what you mean with the play in the drive shaft mine is the same and I HATE it but I also heard the same thing you did about it being "normal". I plow with my truck so I heard thats also hard on it. So Idk when the day comes I`ll have to invest into a new one but do you think going with the same stock one is wise???
